Cable Has Fallen Far Behind Satellite TV for Home Entertainment

Not long ago, cable TV was synonymous with quality home entertainment. It was the first major contender on the scene and it accomplished a lot in the early days of the subscription-based television programming revolution. Then along came satellite TV to rain on cable's parade. Slowly but surely, satellite has risen in the ranks to become the home entertainment option of choice for people that want the very best content at the very lowest prices. If cable has any hope of leveling the playing field, it's going to have to make quite a few changes. The question is though: can you teach an old dog new tricks?

When it comes to television entertainment, the more channels the better. With the advent of HD technology though, it has now become a bit more complicated than that. What good are more channels if those extra channel won't be able to take full advantage of that large LCD or plasma set you recently purchased? Low resolution programming could actually end up taking away from your experience. Whenever you'd switch to one of those channels, you'd end up being reminded of how sub-par your provider really is. This situation is bound to happen with cable since it has significantly less full-time HD channels than satellite. If you're the kind of person to browse through all the channels you have access to, you might be disappointed with cable's delivery. Unless cable improves the resolution of its broadcasts, it's always going to place second to its competitor.

If broadcast resolution takes a close second place to the number of channels you get access to, cable is still going to be inferior. Cable just offers far less for the money you pay. This can also be stated in another way: satellite TV packages are going to be noticeably cheaper than cable's no matter how you look at it. Even though cable's packages are almost always inferior, lets assume for a moment that it has comparable packages. When you place the two side by side, you're going to discover that satellite is still cheaper. You sort of have to start wondering by now why cable doesn't at least lower its prices if its going to offer an inferior product.

Satellite TV is superior to cable in some ways that cable can't ever hope to remedy as well. A prime example of this is with availability. Cable is a wired technology and thus you can only subscribe to it if the appropriate infrastructure is in place in your area. If you live in a fairly remote area then, you might not even be able to sign up. Satellite service, on the other hand, is a wireless technology that works no matter where you're located. All you need is a satellite dish and a clear view of the sky.

Cable also can't hope to compete with satellite's football, basketball, baseball, and soccer coverage. Perhaps because it doesn't use satellites to deliver its content, cable will probably never be able to satisfy hardcore fans out there like satellite can. Unfortunately for cable, it has fallen far behind and it may never catch up again.
