Satellite TV Channels Uninterested in Kennedys Miniseries
The surname 'Kennedy' has been a household name for many generations. People are familiar with the family from their political legacy, their wealth, their celebrity and their tragedies. There exists a great amount of curiosity about this famous family whose controversies and catastrophes have been so public, but yet somehow so private at the same time. It's evident that more is going on just below the surface than the average member of the general public sees, and many admirers and adversaries would give quite a lot for just a quick peek into the real world and the real history behind the Kennedy family. Producers of a new mini-series aptly named "The Kennedys" were counting on this curiosity and intrigue when they created a work based on the lives of the members of the Kennedy family. Now, what they are finding is that while public interest might be strong, the interest of television networks to pick up and air the program is not quite as strong. In fact, it appears not to be there at all.
Although several satellite TV networks have said the series is provocative, well acted and produced, and is an excellent overall piece of work, that it just doesn't have a place with their networks. Part of the reason is the disapproval over several details by prominent members of the Kennedy family. Part of the reason is the controversial material covered. Part of the reason is that after the History Channel suddenly pulled the series, looking to air it on a later date, and the producers began attempting to sell it around to other satellite TV networks. Inevitably there will be a delay in when any network that decides to buy actually closes the deal and airs the program. Since the series will be airing on schedule in many other countries, an online presence will surely be immediately developed, rendering the high price tag useless to networks in the United States. After a series like this is released online, the ratings when it is shown in the US certainly will not be anywhere close to what they might have been. Anyone with any real curiosity and sense of anticipation will eagerly go to the internet, instead of waiting 3 to 6 months for a new release date.
One of the top contenders to buy was satellite TV network Showtime, but they took a pass much to the dismay of "The Kennedys" producers. Part of the reasoning may be the current development of a similar project centering around the lives of the Kennedys happening on HBO. Somehow the market suddenly seems to be flooded with Kennedys projects, making it a hard time to sell for the required price tag. The real reasoning behind the History Channel dumping the miniseries at the last minute may be something that remains a mystery, much like the lives of the miniseries' subject matter. Viewers will just have to stay tuned to satellite TV to see what all the fuss is about for themselves. In terms of generating interest in the venture, at this point all press is good press.
