Buying an HD DVR for Your Home Entertainment System

If you are one of the many people these days who are finding that their favorite TV shows and their busy schedules frequently conflict, then you will be happy to learn that there is something you can do so that you can continue to live your busy life without having to sacrifice watching any programs you want to see. What you should do is purchase an HD DVR. Having a high def digital video recorder will allow you to record programs directly from your television, whether they are movies, sporting events, or a weekly series, in high quality digital format.

When it comes to DVRs, most of the latest models tend to be pretty easy to operate, which is good news for anyone who considers himself to be technologically challenged. However, despite their user friendliness, these devices tend to come packed with special features and advanced options that make the entire experience more enjoyable and personalized. Like many electronic gadgets, in their early days, HD DVRs were pretty expensive. But now there are a lot of quite reasonably priced versions to choose from. Sometimes you can even borrow them for free from your satellite or cable TV provider.

The following description of the three most common types of HD units will help you get a feel for what type will suit your needs the best.

1. High Definition Digital Video Recorders for Satellite Television. This first group of products consists of some of the most popular models available for purchase at the moment. If you live in an area where there is no access to cable TV, then these devices will be the perfect match for you. You have the option of either buying your own machine or leasing one through your satellite provider. Many providers these days offer free equipment -- including recorders that are built in to your high def receiver -- when you sign up for a long term contract (this is usually defined as a subscription that lasts for at least one or two years). With these devices, you will have the ability to record satellite programming in either high or standard definition. They will come with a hard drive with a certain amount of memory space which can be used to store the recorded material. Shows saved in high def format will take up more room than standard def recordings, so you may want to consider getting a DVD writer to free up space.

2. Cable TV Recorders. As you might expect, these products are for cable subscribers. A great feature that is included in most digital video recorders for cable television is their dual tuners. These allow users to multi-task, either by watching one show while recording another on a different channel or by recording two separate programs at the same time. A lot of the satellite DVRs also come with this feature. Unlike the satellite TV units, however, cable models are not often free -- subscribers usually have to rent them for a monthly fee.

3. Digital TV Recorders. These can be purchased at most electronics stores and tend to come with at least 100 gigabytes of storage space. You should opt for one of these models if you want to record digital terrestrial broadcasts.

I work for DISH Network and they have great dual tuner HD DVR's. All of their HD DVR's even have a USB port to connect external hard drives to for additional storage. They also offer more HD channels than any other pay-TV provider, so you know you'll always get the best HD possible with the lowest prices.
