Best Books-To-Movies on Satellite TV
Turning a book into a movie is one of the most fraught projects that Hollywood production houses take on. If something is a runaway bestseller, it is almost guaranteed that the movie based on it will be, at the very least, a financial success. This fact tends to be true even when the film is ultimately deemed to be complete garbage by critics and fans alike, such as The Da Vinci Code movie that featured Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou (from Amelie) yet still managed to disappoint audiences across the country. But every once and a while, the film version gets it right. Obviously, any reasonable fan watching satellite TV after having read a great book cannot expect that the movie will get everything right, or even be able to fit everything in. But if you are willing to cut the Hollywood version a little bit of slack, you might actually be pleasantly surprised by some of these versions. So the next time you are channel surfing on satellite TV, remember that these film version of popular books might actually be worth your while!
1. The Lord of the Rings
This trilogy of fantasy books that were written by JRR Tolkein were some of the most beloved pieces of literature of all time, by children and adult fans alike. When it was announced that the New Zealand native Peter Jackson was going to direct the film versions of books, many people were decidedly nervous, and understandably so. Would Jackson have what it takes to treat such magical tales well while turning them into mainstream movies? The answer, according to most fans, is yes. While not every detail could be fit into the already massively long (especially by conventional Hollywood standards), the essence of Tolkein's work is there. Even if you have not read the books, the stories are strong enough on their own to be enjoyed by viewers of all ages and backgrounds. Highly recommended indeed.
2. Atonement
This 2008 adaptation of an Ian McKellan novel was anticipated by fans for years. The casting of Keira Knightly and James McAvoy in the starring roles could not have been more perfect. The two play a pair of star-crossed lovers, a Romeo & Juliet type story in which their love is denied partly by family circumstance, but also by what seems like an innocent lie by the younger sister of Cecilia. The movie is a tear-jerker indeed, and most fans ended up enjoying the final product.
3. Gone With the Wind
Ask a young person who loves watching satellite TV if this classic American movie was based on a book, and they will likely have no idea. The movie has become so popular over the decades, that few people actually go back to the original source. But before Scarlett O'Hara achieved cellulite glory (now to be seen in high definition!), she was simply a character in a popular book by Margaret Mitchell. One question that many people have when learning this fact is whether or not the film's most famous line - "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" - was in the original text. You'll have to read the book to find out!
