Satellite TV Brings 2.0 Interaction to Television Viewers

The technology of today is moving to version 2.0, with the most popular online websites as well as with television programming. The wave of 2.0 technology represents technology that we can interact with. 2.0 online programs or television shows are ones that people can actively respond to, creating a synergy between the program and the people using it or viewing it. The ways that the internet and television have moved into this 2.0 realm are different, but no less useful or enjoyable.

When we use the term 2.0 to refer to internet programs we are often talking about social networking tools, wikis, and online forums. These types of online programs give people access to interact with the programs, allowing them to have control over the content that goes up. It is the newest and most interactive way to use the internet today. It has really revolutionized the way that people use the web because it gives them more virtual space to have a personal voice online. These social networking tools and informational forums have given people more control of the content online and it has also made it much more entertaining. Now people can use these sites to communicate and share information in a public forum. It is a way of interacting with other people and the web as a whole in ways that we just weren't able to do before.

The way that television has moved into a kind of 2.0 forum is through some of the programming available on satellite TV. Since there is much more room for programming on television today with the hundreds of channels available on satellite tv networks and producers have also taken a hint from the popularity of 2.0 web programs, they have attempted to make television a more interactive entertainment outlet than it has been in the past. Even when watching tv, people are more enthused and more interested if they can interact more, or they can see people like them interacting with the program on the screen. The kinds of programs that fit these categories are game shows, competitions where viewers vote and shows that run their programs based on the advice and feedback of their viewers.

More and more shows have been popping up on satellite TV channels that attempt to make the television viewing experience more interactive. With the Game Show Network game lounge, more viewers are interacting with the shows that are offered. Whether they are vicariously living through the everyday Joes who appear on the game shows or they are actually participating through online voting. With game shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire people can be called on a lifeline and audiences can be polled. There are many other game shows on the Game Show Network that allow viewers to interact with the TV whether it responds or not. Other ways that satellite TV programming has become interactive is through live televised competitions where viewers call in to vote, like on American Idol.

These days people are looking for an entertainment outlet that responds and challenges them to respond and interact, just like they do on the web. Many networks and channels try to incorporate online feedback to all of their shows to give viewers more of a voice. With the satellite TV revolution of game shows and programs that actively incorporate viewer feedback, the world of entertainment is becoming 2.0 interactive just like the web.
